Thiamine for the treatment of acute decompensated heart failure☆

Thiamine deficiency is very common in patients with heart failure [1]. Previous studies have suggested that thiamine supplementation may be an effective treatment of chronic heart failure [2,3]. It is not clear if it may also be effective in the acute setting. Two other conditions associated with thiamine deficiency, Wernicke's encephalopathy and beriberi, have been known to improve within hours of thiamine supplementation [4,5].
