Mumps is a childhood disease described by Hippocrates more than 2000 years ago (Quinlisk. J Infect Dis. 2010;202:655–656). It is characterized by a febrile illness associated with painful and inflamed parotid glands. The causal agent is an RNA virus of the paramyxoviridae family. Mumps has reemerged as an infection that is affecting young people and adults in the developed world. Current national and global trends show that smaller outbreaks continue to occur (Quinlisk.
